Static vs video, for DTC brands

Static ads vs
video ads: which
converts better?

By Abhi Chawla, founder · Last updated: 2026-09-14

Neither format converts better by default. Static ads fit messages that land in one frame and cost less to test in volume. Video fits products people need to see in use. Test angles in static, then make video for the angles that win. New to the format? Start with what a static ad is.

"Pick the format that fits the message. Static ads suit ideas that fit in one frame and are cheaper to test in volume. Video suits products people need to see in use. A practical order is to test angles in static, then make video for the angles that win."

The short answer

What static ads do well

A static ad is one image, which makes it the cheapest ad format to change. A new headline, offer or product shot only needs a new layout, so statics are the natural format for testing.

Because each variation is quick to make, you can test more angles in the same week and move budget to the winners sooner, while a video concept for the same idea would still be in production.

Statics also deliver the whole message at once. Meta's own research found people spend 1.7 seconds on average with a piece of mobile feed content (Facebook IQ, 2016), and a static shows the product, the headline and the offer inside that glance.

Where static has the edge

  • Production: no footage to shoot, generate or edit
  • Isolated tests: change one variable at a time, such as the headline, image or offer
  • Lower overhead: no videographers, editors, actors or shot lists
  • Instant message: product, headline and offer land in one glance
  • Easy to resize: one concept becomes a 4:5 feed image and a 9:16 Story, the shapes Meta recommends for those placements

When video ads win

Video is a strong format, and some jobs need it. The skill is knowing which jobs those are for your brand.

Video tends to be the better choice when you need to tell a story, demonstrate a transformation or build an emotional connection with people who have never heard of you. If the product needs explaining, such as how it works, what it feels like or what changes after using it, video gives you the time to show it.

Brand storytelling, creator-style testimonials and product demonstrations earn video's higher production cost. On TikTok, video is the default. Its in-feed ad specifications cover video formats, and images run as carousels.

Video is the right call when

  • Your product needs demonstration: skincare routines, fitness equipment, food preparation
  • You are reaching cold audiences who have never heard of your brand
  • Creator or customer testimonials are a core part of your strategy
  • The transformation is the selling point: before and after, unboxing, fit in motion
  • You are building long-term brand memory as well as immediate sales

The expensive mistake is making a video for a message that fits in one frame.

When static ads win

Static ads have their own structural advantages for direct response, and knowing where they fit will change how you split your creative production budget.

The core advantage of static is immediacy. A static ad delivers its whole message in a single glance: the product, the headline, the offer. A video ad asks the viewer to stop, watch and wait for the message to unfold, and for many direct-response messages that extra step isn't needed.

Static is a strong first choice for

  • Retargeting: warm audiences already know the product and need a clear offer
  • Product launches: get a new SKU in front of people without waiting on video
  • Sales and promotions: the offer is the message
  • Testing new angles: try several headlines while a video concept is still in production
  • Extending a winner: spin up static variations of a proven message
  • Catalog browsing: carousel and collection ads where the product image does the selling

How to run a fair static vs
video test on Meta

There is no universal answer to which format converts better, because results depend on the product, the audience, the funnel stage and the quality of the creative. The reliable way to find out for your brand is a test in your own account.

Keep everything equal except the format: the same angle, the same audience, the same budget and the same landing page. Then judge the result on the goal you pay for, such as cost per purchase, instead of clicks or views, which favor different formats in different ways.

A fair test has

  • One angle, made as both a static and a video
  • The same audience, budget, placements and landing page
  • A conversion goal, such as purchases, as the deciding metric
  • Enough spend on each ad to reach a result you trust
  • Production cost and time counted alongside media results

Static Ads

  • You make: one image per size
  • Production: layout and export, no footage
  • Message: lands in one glance
  • Changing it: swap the headline or offer
  • Meta shapes: 4:5 feeds, 9:16 Stories and Reels
  • Best for: offers, launches, reviews, retargeting

Video Ads

  • You make: footage, edit and sound
  • Production: a shoot, AI generation or both
  • Message: unfolds over several seconds
  • Changing it: re-edit or regenerate
  • TikTok: in-feed ad specs are video formats
  • Best for: demos, texture, routines, testimonials

Use both, but lead with static

You don't have to pick a side. Use each format at the stage where it is strongest.

Test new angles, messages and offers as static ads first, because each one is quick and cheap to make. Run them against the same audience, see which angles earn purchases, and note what the winners have in common.

Then make video versions of the winning angles. The video budget goes to ideas that already worked as statics, and you know what the video has to say before anyone starts making it.

The approach in practice

  • Week 1: make static variations that test different angles, headlines and offers
  • Week 2: run them with equal budgets and let the results surface winners
  • Week 3: pause the losers, scale the static winners and brief video on the top angles
  • Week 4: launch video versions of the proven angles alongside new static tests

Your static tests keep running while the video is made, which keeps a supply of fresh creatives in the account as older ads fatigue.

What AI video can and can't do
for product ads

AI video tools generate short clips from a text prompt or from reference images, which makes a video version of a winning static angle faster to try. Google's Veo 3.1, for example, generates clips of 4, 6 or 8 seconds in 16:9 or 9:16 and accepts up to three reference images to guide the subject and style, according to Google's Gemini API documentation (checked September 2026). A longer ad is several clips edited together.

Ad platforms are adding motion to statics too. Meta lists image animation among the generative AI features of Advantage+ creative, alongside image generation, image expansion and background generation.

The tools move quickly, and results vary by model and by product, so treat every generated clip as a draft that has to pass a product check before it runs.

Where AI video helps

  • Moving versions of a proven static: camera moves, pours, splashes, fabric in motion
  • Settings and moods that would otherwise need a location shoot
  • Variations of one concept for different audiences, in vertical and horizontal formats

What still needs a human check

  • Label text and small print, which can warp or change between frames
  • Product shape, color and proportions, which can drift from the real item
  • Hands using the product and other physical interactions
  • Claims and voiceover, which need the same proof as any other ad

100 Creatives makes
statics and AI video.

100 Creatives is an AI-powered creative agency in Calgary that makes static and video ads, and the product imagery behind them, for DTC and consumer brands advertising on Meta, TikTok and Google.

Our video ads are made with AI video tools and art-directed by our team, and the product and lifestyle imagery behind both formats is made without a physical shoot. That lets one team take an angle from a static test to a video version.

Every engagement starts with a brand intake covering visual language, model preferences, colorways and export specs. Creative batches turn around in 48 hours, and revisions come back within 48 hours.

Static and video ad creative is quoted from $4,000, with a fixed total in writing before any work starts.

If you only need a few statics a month and already have product photos, a freelancer or a self-serve tool will cost less than our smallest engagement. Our guide to static ads compares what each production route costs.

Do static ads still work on Facebook? +

Yes. Meta still publishes image ad specs for Facebook and Instagram feeds, Stories and Reels, and its Advantage+ creative tools generate and enhance single-image ad variations. Static ads suit launches, offers, reviews and retargeting, and they are cheap to test in volume. Whether a static beats a video in your account depends on the product and the angle, so test both on the same audience and budget.

Are video ads better than static ads for conversions? +

Not by default. Video is the stronger choice when the product needs to be seen in use, such as a demonstration, a texture, a routine or a person talking to camera. Static is the stronger choice when the whole message fits in one frame, such as an offer or a review. The winning format depends on the funnel stage and the angle, so compare cost per purchase in your own account.

What is the static-first approach to ad creative testing? +

Static-first testing means trying new angles, messages and offers as static ads first, because each static is quick and cheap to make. Once an angle wins on purchases, you make video versions of that angle to scale it. Video budget then goes only to ideas that already worked, and the static tests keep running while the video is in production.

How many static ad creatives should I test per week? +

There is no universal number. The right volume depends on your ad spend, the number of audiences you run and how quickly your ads fatigue. A useful rule is to keep a steady flow of new angles in testing every week rather than launching one big batch a quarter, and to judge each test on purchases rather than clicks.

Should I use static or video ads for retargeting? +

Start with static, then test video. People in a retargeting audience already know the product, so a static that shows it with a clear offer and a reason to buy now is a sensible first test. Video earns its place in retargeting when it answers a specific doubt, such as how the product fits or how it is used. Run both against the same audience and compare.

Can AI make video ads for DTC products? +

Yes, within limits. Google's Veo 3.1, for example, generates clips of 4, 6 or 8 seconds and accepts up to three reference images, so a longer ad is several clips edited together. AI video handles motion, settings and variations quickly, but label text, product proportions and hands using the product can drift and need checking frame by frame. 100 Creatives makes AI video ads art-directed by our team.
