Static ads, defined
What is a
static ad?
A static ad is a paid ad made of one still image, with no motion or sound. It usually shows the product, a short headline and a call to action, and it runs in placements such as the Facebook and Instagram feeds, Stories, and the Google Display Network. Every spec on this page links to the platform page we checked in September 2026.
What is static advertising?
Static advertising is advertising built on fixed images. Online, it means image ads in social feeds, Stories and display networks. Offline, the same term covers print ads, posters and static billboards, the ones that stay put instead of rotating through spots like a digital screen. A static advertisement and a static ad are the same thing.
The ad platforms each use their own name for the format. Meta's Ads Guide calls it an image ad. Google Ads asks for image assets in Performance Max and responsive display campaigns. TikTok runs images in its feed through Carousel Ads.
The image file itself is the static creative. One concept usually ships as a set of static creatives, one per shape: a 4:5 portrait for feeds, a 9:16 vertical for Stories and Reels, and 1.91:1 landscape and 1:1 square versions for Google.
Static ads vs video, carousel
and animated ads
The choice comes down to whether the message fits in one frame. A static ad works when it does. A carousel, a motion ad or a video earns its extra production when the message needs a sequence, movement or sound.
| Format | What the viewer sees | Good for | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Static (image) ad | One still image | A single product, offer or proof point | One layout per size, so a new angle is cheap to make and change |
| Carousel ad | 2 to 10 swipeable cards on Meta; a set of swipeable images on TikTok | Several products, features or steps | Each card is its own static creative |
| Motion or animated ad | A still layout with light movement, such as animated text or a looping product | Adding movement to a layout that already works | Meta lists GIF with MP4 and MOV as video file types, and Advantage+ creative includes image animation |
| Video ad | Footage, usually with sound | Demos, texture, routines, a person talking to camera | More to produce, and the default format in TikTok's in-feed ad specs |
Static ad sizes and specs for
Meta, TikTok and Google
Platforms change these numbers, so every table below links to the official page we read on the day this guide was updated. If a spec here disagrees with the platform's page when you read it, go with the platform.
Meta: Facebook and Instagram image ads
Meta accepts JPG or PNG files up to 30MB for single image ads. It recommends 1440 x 1800 pixels at 4:5 for feeds and 1440 x 2560 at 9:16 for Stories and Reels. A 1080 x 1350 file has the same 4:5 shape at a lower resolution than Meta's recommendation.
| Placement | Aspect ratio | Recommended size | Minimum | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Facebook Feed | 4:5 | 1440 x 1800 px | 600 px wide, 750 px tall at 4:5 | Headline 27 characters, primary text 50 to 150 characters |
| Instagram Feed | 4:5 recommended; accepts 1.91:1 to 4:5 | 1440 x 1800 px | 500 px wide | Headline 40 characters, primary text 125 characters |
| Facebook Stories | 9:16 | 1440 x 2560 px | 500 px wide | Keep roughly 14% of the top, 35% of the bottom and 6% of each side free of text and logos |
| Instagram Stories | 9:16 | 1440 x 2560 px | 500 px wide | Same safe zones as Facebook Stories |
| Instagram Reels | 9:16 | 1440 x 2560 px | 500 px wide | Same safe zones; primary text 44 characters |
| Facebook Feed carousel | 1:1 per card | At least 1080 x 1080 px | Not listed | 2 to 10 cards; headline 20 characters, primary text 80 characters |
TikTok: images run as Carousel Ads
TikTok's in-feed ad specifications cover video only. For images, TikTok Ads Manager offers Carousel Ads, which TikTok's help center describes as a format that supports images for in-feed ads. The About Carousel Ads article lists Traffic, Web Conversions, App Promotion, Lead Generation, Product Sales (Catalog) and Brand Auction Reach as supported ad types.
Neither article lists dimensions or file limits for carousel images, so we have left them out. Confirm them in TikTok Ads Manager before you export.
Google: Performance Max and display image assets
Google's overview of ad specs names 1200 x 628 (1.91:1) and 1200 x 1200 (1:1) as the most common Google Ads image sizes. Performance Max asks for both, plus an optional 4:5 vertical, and Google describes Performance Max assets as serving across YouTube, Display, Search, Discover, Gmail and Maps.
| Performance Max asset | Aspect ratio | Recommended | Minimum | Required? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Landscape image | 1.91:1 | 1200 x 628 px | 600 x 314 px | Required |
| Square image | 1:1 | 1200 x 1200 px | 300 x 300 px | Required |
| Vertical image | 4:5 | 960 x 1200 px | 480 x 600 px | Optional |
| Square logo | 1:1 | 1200 x 1200 px | 128 x 128 px | Required |
| Landscape logo | 4:1 | 1200 x 300 px | 512 x 128 px | Optional |
Responsive display ads use the same landscape size, 1200 x 628 with a 600 x 314 minimum, and a smaller recommended square of 600 x 600 with a 300 x 300 minimum, according to Google's responsive display ads specs. A 1200 x 1200 square covers both campaign types.

Anatomy of a high-converting
static ad
People glance at feed ads. Meta's own research found that people spend 1.7 seconds on average with a piece of mobile feed content, and that 0.25 seconds of exposure is enough for them to recall it (Facebook IQ, April 2016). The first five parts below have to work inside that glance. The sixth makes sure the placement doesn't cover them.
The hook
The headline carries the idea by itself. Write the benefit, the problem or the surprising fact in a few words, make it the largest type on the image, and check it on a phone held at arm's length before you approve it.
The product
Show exactly what the buyer gets, large enough to recognize at feed size. The pack, colorway and label should match what arrives in the box, because the product page and the delivery have to live up to the ad.
The offer
Give a reason to act now if one exists: a price, a bundle, a discount, free shipping. With no offer, name the next step instead. Put a deadline on the image only when the deadline is real.
The proof
A review quote, a star rating with its review count, an award, a press mention or a sales figure. Each one has to be true and documented. The FTC's advertising guide for small businesses says advertisers must have evidence to back up their claims.
The CTA
One action in plain words, set apart from the headline so it reads as the next step. Use the same words as the call-to-action button you choose in Ads Manager, so the ad asks for one thing. In Stories and Reels, keep it above the bottom safe zone.
The placement
Design each size on purpose instead of cropping one file. For Stories and Reels, Meta suggests keeping roughly the top 14%, the bottom 35% and 6% of each side clear of text and logos, so the interface doesn't cover them.
The design rules that sit on top of these six parts, from text hierarchy to contrast and whitespace, are in what makes a good static ad.
Static vs video ads: when each wins
Static ads suit messages that fit in one frame: a new product, a price or offer, a review, a comparison. Each concept is one layout per size, so testing a new angle costs one new design.
Video suits products people need to see in use: texture, fit, a routine, a before-and-after that happens over time, or a person talking to camera. It is also the default on TikTok, where the in-feed ad specifications cover video and images run as carousels.
One workable order is to test an angle as a static first, then make video for the angles that win. The longer comparison, including what AI video tools can and can't do for product ads, is in static vs video ads.
Lead with static
Offers, launches, reviews, comparisons and price changes. One frame, quick to swap when an offer ends.
Lead with video
Demos, texture, routines and people talking. Full-screen video placements such as Reels and the TikTok feed.
Use both
When an angle wins as a static, a video version gives the same idea more room to show the product.
Static ad examples
Our swipe file of DTC static ad examples has 25 static ads: 10 for a Greek yogurt, 9 for a colostrum supplement and 6 for a wine brand. Each set comes with notes on why the layout works, from type hierarchy to where the proof sits.
Most of our client work is under NDA, so every example on that page is a spec concept: work made for a brand that did not commission it. The examples show layout, hierarchy and copy structure. None of them ran as paid ads, so they tell you nothing about performance, and some of their proof lines are placeholders a real brand would need to substantiate.
How brands make static ads,
and what it costs
There are five common routes. The prices below come from each source's public page, checked September 2026, and they aren't like-for-like: a salary buys a person's time, a subscription buys a request queue, and an agency quote buys a defined scope.
| Route | What it costs | Fits | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| In-house designer | US median pay for graphic designers was $62,960 a year in May 2025 (BLS), before benefits, software and photography | Brands that need statics every week and want the skill inside the team | One person's range sets the ceiling; product photography is a separate cost |
| Freelancer | US freelance graphic designers average $38.06 an hour, with a range of $21 to $85 (PayScale, 234 profiles, updated June 2026) | A handful of statics a month from product photos you already have | Availability; you own the brief, the specs and the checking |
| Design subscription | ManyPixels Advanced is ~$699 a month and works one project at a time. Penji Essentials is ~$995 a month and includes ad creatives. Superside starts at a ~$15,000 monthly minimum on an annual term, plus a ~$1,000 monthly software fee. | A steady queue of resizes, variations and new layouts | Output depends on queue position and plan tier; some plans need an annual term |
| Agency | Quoted by scope. See ad creative agency pricing. 100 Creatives quotes static and video ad engagements from $4,000. | Brands that need concepts, imagery and production handled together | Minimum engagement sizes; get the scope and total in writing |
| AI and self-serve tools | Adobe Express Premium is ~$9.99 a month. The Brief AI Pro is ~$29 a month, billed annually at ~$348. Meta's Advantage+ creative generates and enhances variations of your own image ads. | Resizes, text variations and simple layouts from assets you supply | Product accuracy and brand consistency depend on you checking every output |
Where 100 Creatives fits
100 Creatives is an AI-powered creative agency in Calgary, Canada, that makes static and video ads, and the product imagery behind them, for DTC and consumer brands advertising on Meta, TikTok and Google. The product and lifestyle imagery is made without a physical shoot, and our team art-directs the AI video work.
Every engagement starts with a brand intake covering visual language, model preferences, colorways and export specs. Creative batches turn around in 48 hours, and revisions come back within 48 hours. Static and video ad creative is quoted from $4,000 (USD), with a fixed total in writing before any work starts. The starting prices for our other services are on the pricing page.
We're the wrong fit if you need a handful of statics a month and already have good product photos. A freelancer or a self-serve tool will cost less than our smallest engagement, and the table above shows by how much. We fit brands that need product imagery made without a shoot, plus statics and AI video from one team, exported to the sizes Meta, TikTok and Google ask for.
Static ad
questions
What are static ads?
Static ads are paid ads made of a single still image, with no video, animation or sound. They usually combine a product image, a short headline and a call to action, and they run as image ads on Facebook, Instagram and Google, or as image carousels on TikTok. The image file behind a static ad is called the static creative, and one concept is usually exported in several sizes.
What is static advertising?
Static advertising is advertising built on fixed images instead of video or motion. Online, it covers image ads in social feeds, Stories and display networks, such as Facebook and Instagram image ads and Google Performance Max image assets. Offline, it covers print ads, posters and static billboards, the kind that stay put instead of rotating like digital screens. Brands use it because one image is quick to produce, resize and test.
Are static ads still effective on Meta?
Static ads are still fully supported on Meta. Meta's Ads Guide publishes current image specs for Facebook and Instagram feeds, Stories and Reels, and its Advantage+ creative tools generate and enhance single-image ad variations. Whether a static or a video wins in your account depends on the product, the angle and the audience, so run both formats on the same angle and budget and compare the results.
What size should a static ad be?
For Facebook and Instagram feeds, Meta recommends a 4:5 image at 1440 x 1800 pixels. For Facebook and Instagram Stories and Instagram Reels, use 9:16 at 1440 x 2560 pixels and keep roughly the top 14%, the bottom 35% and 6% of each side free of text and logos. For Google Performance Max, supply landscape 1.91:1 images at 1200 x 628 and square 1:1 images at 1200 x 1200. Specs checked September 2026.
What are the best static ad types for performance?
No static ad type wins in every account. Common types to test are a product hero with a benefit headline, a review or testimonial ad, a comparison ad, a before-and-after, a feature callout and an offer ad built around a price or discount. Choose the type that fits the angle you are testing, change one thing per test, and only use proof and claims you can document.
How much does it cost to make static ads?
It depends on the route. Adobe Express Premium, a self-serve design tool, costs ~$9.99 a month. US freelance graphic designers average $38.06 an hour, according to PayScale. The ManyPixels Advanced design subscription is ~$699 a month. An in-house graphic designer earns a US median of $62,960 a year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Agencies quote by scope, and 100 Creatives quotes static and video ad engagements from $4,000.
